New Speed Record Set For Wind-Powered Vehicles

Richard Jenkins reached 126.1 mph in his car Greenbird on the plains of Ivanpah Dry Lake in Nevada, which established a new land speed record for a wind turbine vehicle. "It's fantastic, it's one of those things that spend so much time as you try to do and when it actually happens, it's almost too easy," said Jenkins. The Greenbird is a composite carbon fiber vehicles that use the wind (and nothing else) for power. The designers describe it as a "very high performance sailing, but uses a strong wing, rather than a veil, to generate the movement. Because of the shape of the craft, especially at high speeds, the wings also lift, utility of an airplane, but very dangerous for a car. To compensate, designers have added wings to small "sticks" of the car to the ground, just as the Formula 1 cars. "Greenbird weighs 600 kg when it is still standing," says Jenkins. "But the speed, the effect of her wings weigh just over a tonne." Jenkins has also built a windmill craft that moves on the ice, rather than the earth. "Now that we have broken the record I will return to the ice cream. There is always a debate as to whether travel on ice or land will be faster.
